Heavy by Kiese Laymon, our August General Track read, gave us insight into the livelihood of Black men and the Black families who raise them. This book was paired with the bell hooks classic All About Love, so we spent a great deal of time exploring love and how the people who love us can oftentimes cause the most harm. Our community engaged with one another about honesty, vulnerability, shame, romantic relationships, family, and toxic masculinity. In the end, we had the distinct pleasure of closing out the month with Kiese and discussing his body of work, how he has changed during the book release, and Heavy being optioned for a film by Issa Rae’s company.
