Watch Our Author Chat with Dawnie Walton

Our October General Track read was Walton’s debut novel, The Final Revival of Opal and Nev. The author tells a story of interracial ’70s duo Opal Jewel and Nev Charles. When a violent tragedy happens during the release of their first album, the pair draw massive but short-lived attention. Nev, a white English boy, garnered more success and fame as the years went on while Opal, a quiet Black girl from Detroit, became known as the foremother of Afropunk and her iconic moments that resurface as memes. A reunion tour promises to bring the pair together for the first time in decades. However, the personal, racial, and political tensions that pervaded the duo back then is still ever-present. With heavy influence from many well-known and forgotten Black musician and singers, the novel is sure to not disappoint.
