What do we do with ‘theory’? Live Discussion
October 15 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT
Barbara Christian (professor of African-American literature) published “The Race for Theory” in the Spring 1987 issue of Cultural Critique. In it, she discusses the ‘reinvention of theory’ by Western philosophers to incorporate and accommodate an agenda of literature, criticism, and theory that refuses the contributions of black women scholars. She writes:
“I have seized this occasion to break the silence among those of us, critics, as we are now called, who have been intimidated, devalued by what i call the race for theory.”
Let’s discuss! What is our relationship to theory? Is theory always already insufficient to discuss (black women’s) lived experience? How might Christian leave room for alternative relationships to theory? But more than that, what are we doing with theory within Smart Brown Girl? And what do we get out of it (if anything)?
