Happy Birthday Nina Simone

Nina Simone ValedictorianToday marks the 82nd birthday of legendary musician, singer, songwriter Nina Simone. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina in 1933, she later took on her nickname, Nina, as her official first name and picked up the moniker Simone from actress Simone Signoret. Nina Simone was more than a force to be reckoned with as she redefined an era of jazz and pop music, meshing together various genres from blues to classical music to create rhapsodic melodies that carry a deep message. Many of Simone’s covers, most notably Strange Fruit, have become the most prolific renditions. A champion of Civil Rights and advocate for the brown girl, Nina Simone is an original #SmartBrownGirl.

Watch Nina Simone perform Sinnerman, one of her most popular songs from the 1965 Pastel Blues album, live at the Montreux 1976 JAZZ Festival.
